Golf Rules

Privacy Policy

Effective September 8, 2026

Golf Rules is an app for learning the Rules of Golf. This page explains what information the app collects, why, and what happens to it. We've tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate.

The short version

Your profile, quiz scores, and progress stay on your device. We never see them, and there's no account or sign-up.

Ace, the AI rules official, sends your question to Anthropic and OpenAI to generate an answer. That's the only feature that sends anything off your device.

We don't run ads, sell data, or use analytics or tracking SDKs of any kind.

Information stored only on your device

When you create a profile, the name and avatar you choose are saved in a local database on your device using Apple's on-device storage. The same is true for your quiz results, scores, and category progress. None of this is transmitted to us or to any third party. It exists only on your phone, and deleting a profile or uninstalling the app removes it for good.

Ruling

The Ruling tab lets you ask golf-rules questions in plain English. To answer, the app sends your question (and, for follow-up questions, a short window of recent conversation for context) to our backend, which forwards it to two AI providers:

ProviderWhat they receiveWhy
OpenAIYour question textFinding the relevant rules to answer from
AnthropicYour question, matched rule text, and recent conversationWriting the answer

These providers process the request under their own privacy policies: OpenAI's and Anthropic's. The backend that talks to them runs on Vercel, our hosting provider. It does not store your questions or Ace's answers; each request is processed and discarded, not logged into a database.

These conversations aren't linked to a name, email, or account, since the app doesn't have any of those. We do use your device's IP address briefly (for up to 24 hours) to enforce a daily limit on how many questions can be asked, as an anti-abuse measure. It isn't tied to anything else in the app and isn't used for any other purpose.

Children's privacy

Golf Rules is designed to be usable by golfers of any age, including within a family where a parent sets up profiles for their kids. Profiles only ever hold a display name and a picked avatar icon (never an email address, birthdate, or other contact information), and that data never leaves the device. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, child or adult, beyond what's described on this page.
